This superb Indian work of art is finely hand carved from a single large piece of rich dense well figured hardwood and it is remarkable in its detail. It portrays a very large Indian elephant finally dressed in elaborate ceremonial robes and bridle. It is being attended by three keepers, two riding on its back and the third walking on foot along its side each carrying a wooden staff. The tusks, toes and eyes are inlaid and made from small pieces of bone. The impressive figure group is displayed on a shaped naturalistic base all carved from the same single block of wood. This finely carved sculpture is in excellent original condition and has a very pleasing rich colour with good age related patination.
