This wonderful embroidered band was created in India in the early 19th Century. The band was originally designed to form part of a skirt or dress. It still may be used for this purpose, or it could be placed on display and enjoyed purely as an exquisite piece of workmanship.
The textile is made from crimson (red) satin which has been finely embroidered with yellow, turquoise and black silk. The craftsperson has worked by hand, delicately chain-stitching a variety of motifs into the fabric. The body of the textile is decorated with alternating rows of peacocks and flower sprays. Parrots and flowers feature in an ornamental border, which extends along the bottom of the band.
