Ammi Phillips (American, 1788-1865) attributed oil painting on canvas, circa 1835-1840, depicting the portrait of a brown-haired gentleman, his left arm resting on a stack of books or ledgers. 30″ H x 25.25″ W. Provenance: From a 240 East 15th Street estate. Note: The offered lot by Ammi Phillips bears marked similarity to the works of the artist’s later “Kent Limner” period of 1835-1840, particularly the images of gentlemen painted in the area of Lime Rock and Litchfield, Connecticut. It is of note that this composition is in reverse, which may have been a request of the unknown sitter. (cf. David R. Allaway, “My People: The Works of Ammi Phillips”, vol. 1, pps. 72-73, figs. 363-367.)
