It has a elegant tapering form with a undeep groove running on the top and bottom. The marble is a breccia type with striking vains in a reddish brown color. It has deep incrustation on the side where it laid on the sand and the vains are deepened with time.
These columns are believed to be religious objects whereas others think they are counterweights. Undeniably they have an intrinsic abstract beauty which almost feels modern. Interestingly men in ancient times often chose to use abstract form to worship their deities alltough they perfectly were capable of figurative work.

At the beginning of this period, the Buddhism image is highly influenced by the Hindu iconography from India; later on the image took on a local characteristic by displaying a more typical Mon style with broad face, large curls hair and bridged eyebrows. Many of these images were made of stone, stucco and terracotta and used to adorn the religious buildings.

The body is sculpted with a band frieze with an archaic motif. Two inverted U-shaped handles punctuate the edge. This type of bronze bucket was cast with lost wax from molds in several parts and assembled when the piece was poured, these are the traces that can be seen on the back of the bucket. . The bronze has a beautiful green and dark gray excavation patina. This perfume burner was originally to have longer feet, no doubt arched, cut very long ago since the place of the cut has the same patina as the rest of the piece.

Mithuna is the third sign in Indian astrology. The Mithuna is equivalent to the Gemini in Tropical Zodiac. The only difference is that Mithuna is represented by a man and a woman. Mithuna stands for couple (which Mithuna is represented by). The dates occupied under this sign are June 16 to July 15. In Mithuna (as seen only in the birth chart), Mercury is the ruler. Moon, Venus, Saturn, and Rahu sees this sign and its ruling planet as a friend, the Sun sees the said two as neutral while Mars, Jupiter, and Ketu sees the former as hostile for them. Emerald is their principal gemstone, night time is their time of strength, and 5 is their principal lucky number. In its ascendant (or lagna), Venus is the most auspicious planet.

A beautiful large sculptural piece, created in China during the Northern Qi dynasty period, between the 549 and 577 AD. This horse statue is extremely finely modeled of earthenware pottery, standing in a very elegant and majestic position striding on a trapezoidal shaped base.

The animal has a gracefully arched neck to the left looking forward and its extremely well modeled. The head is adorned with a large detailed tassels of plumes and the body is embellished with a beautiful saddle and intricate harnesses. The trapping around the chest and rump is adorned with elaborated tassels and the straps are accented with multiples florets and bosses in high relief. Decorated with dotted and circles patterns.

The surface is treated with applications of natural color pigments such; red, white and others.

Has a measurements of 435 mm by 319 mm by 243 mm (17.10 x 12.55 x 9.55 Inches) (43.5 x 31.9 x 24.3 Cm).

Northern Qi, was the successor state of the Chinese Xianbei state of Eastern Wei and was founded by Emperor Wenxuan. Emperor Wenxuan had a Han father Gao Huan (specially, he is a Xianbei in cultural conception), and a Xianbei mother, Lou Zhaojun. As Eastern Wei’s powerful minister Gao Huan was succeeded by his sons Gao Cheng and Gao Yang, who took the throne from Emperor Xiaojing of Eastern Wei in 550 and established Northern Qi as Emperor Wenxuan. Northern Qi was the strongest state out of the three main states (the other two being Northern Zhou state and Chen Dynasty) in China when Chen was established. Northern Qi however was plagued by violence and/or incompetent emperors (in particular Houzhu), corrupt officials, and deteriorating armies. In 571, an important official who guide the emperors Emperor Wucheng and Houzhu, He Shikai, was killed. Houzhu attempted to strengthen the power of throne, instead he triggered a series of purges that became violent in late 573.

In 577, Northern Qi was assaulted by Northern Zhou, a northwestern kingdom with poorer resources. The Northern Qi, with ineffective leadership, quickly disintegrated within a month, with large scale defections of court and military personnel. Both Houzhu and the last emperor Youzhu were captured, and both died in late 577. Emperor Wenxuan son Gao Shaoyi, the Prince of Fanyang, under protection by Tujue, later declared himself the emperor of Northern Qi in exile, but was turned over by Tujue to Northern Zhou in 580 and exiled to modern Sichuan. It is a matter of dispute whether Gao Shaoyi should properly be considered a Northern Qi emperor, but in any case, the year 577 is generally considered by historians as the ending date for Northern Qi.

It has an elegant tapering formed base with a undeep rimmed cup. The alabaster is strikingly vained. There are some old restaurations visible which blend in well. As time and coincidence shaped its patina it is unique and gives it an extra dimension. Some incrustation is noticable.

The Bactrian culture existed between the 3rd millennium B.C. and the 6th century in Central Asia comprising modern Afghanistan and bordering India. Its origins as a bronze age civilization was only recently (1970s) discovered by Russian archaeologist. And it was only in the 1990s that Western countries learned about it.
At its most famous site, the Bactria-Margiana complex, they found an astonishing amount of remains which still is being researched today. Apart from beautiful metal objects a lot of stone cups, chalices and idols were discovered. This example has no signs of mechanical tools, a subtle incrustation enhancing the alabaster and an overall very attractive patina.
This chalice was acquired on the London art market in 2023. The object was previously part of a London private collection.
Provenance
From a private UK collection, acquired at Mansour Gallery London 1990’s.
