Antique Chinoiserie style bamboo and rattan card / mahjong table featuring beautifully hand-painted Asian herons or egrets (circa 1910). ” Bamboo goes in and out of style, but it has always been terribly chic. It reeks of traveling and pleasure, which is why it was so popular back in the 1700’s. The word is derived from banwu , a term from southwest India that was transported to the forests of Indonesia by Dutch explorers. Bamboo first captured the Western imagination back in the 16th century, when travellers to the mysterious Far East sent back tales of a wondrous plant that an Englishman called ‘a thick reed, as big as a mans legge'” (ref: The NY Times of 10 Apr 1998). The t able retains elements of a wonderfully rich scorched bamboo finish. Discovered in Italy, the seller indicated the table was from Sorrento, a claim that cannot be verified. It is in fair condition with evident nicks, cuts, scrapes and blemishing from age-related wear and tear. There is some missing paint to the top as shown in the photos. It is either a restorer’s dream or a perfectionist’s burden. Whatever the case for you, the table is filled with character which you may choose to have restored or simply left as is with all its aged charm. Please enjoy the many photos attached to this listing. Upon request a video will be provided. *Please enquire for a shipping quote to your location.
